Last summer I strapped on my Zoo Keeper gear, watched Fierce Creatures, and headed to Amsterdams oldest Zoo, Artis , to capture this young family in their adopted (natural) habitat. It’s a bit of an understatement to say that they love the Zoo. I mean, I love cheesecake but I don’t eat it every weekend. But these kids are OBSESSED with it (The Zoo, not cheesecake). Every weekend you’ll find them saying hi to Nemo and Dory, dancing with King Julian, waving at Simba and being absolutely terrified of that big MF’ing Gorilla. Have you ever seen a Gorilla? There’s an scary one at the Zoo. Go say hi sometime.

Anyways, this was probably one of the easiest kids shoots I’ve ever done, because beforehand, the parents and I agreed to give the kids free reign. The Zoo was kids territory, and they could decide where to go, what to see and what to do. It didn’t matter if the background wasn’t spectacular, this was the kid’s show, and we adults were but mere players. And you know what? I never had it so easy on a shoot!

Everybody was relaxed and having fun and there were no cars, bikers or angry junkies. What a pleasant change! If you’re ever thinking of doing a shoot, and not knowing which location to pick: CHOOSE THIS ONE!
