3 Excellent podcasts about body image
Disclaimer: I’m not a psychologist, dietician or health care professional, so the knowledge and research I have in body image is strongly related to my own experience.
TW: This post will talk about dieting, weight loss and wellness. If these are sensitive topics for you, it might be best to skip this one.
Ah, podcasts. I love absolutely love them! I spend so many hours editing photos, that I consider myself a bit of an authority when it comes to recommending them. Which means that you reading this will be in good hands 🙂
It’s no secret that my photography philosophy is based on body positivity (or better yet, body neutrality). And I try to educate myself as much as I can on the topic, to better help my clients if they are feeling insecure in front of the lens. But the more I listen to these podcasts, the more I realize that this isn’t just for professionals like me (whose work deals a lot with body image). It’s actually for everyone who has been struggling, or know someone who is struggling with the toxic wellness industry as a whole.
Well, I’m here with some happy news. There are resources out there that will hopefully give you some peace of mind. But also reaffirm that you are, in fact, absolutely perfect just the way you are. And fuck the rest.
1: Maintenance Phase
This is one of my favorites and I have no shame in saying that I binged ALL the episode in a week. And re-listened to a few episodes just because they’re so good. Aubrey Gordon and Micheal Hobbs are the perfect duo to take you on a debunking tour of the wellness and weight loss industry. They are funny, thorough researchers, and will either leave you snorting with laughter, or outraged by how horrible a measuring system the BMI actually is. I can’t recommend this podcast enough.

2: Geen kleine man
A Dutch and Belgian podcast about how women’s bodies are treated by the healthcare system. What do we know about the female body and hormones? Are there any underlying issues that, regardless of our emaciated and modern society, we fundamentally still know very little about?
This is a truly eye-opening hour long documentary podcast, which delves into the treatment of women in every sector of the healthcare system. And how serious symptoms can be overlooked by internal (and mostly unintentional) biases of healthcare professionals.

3: Appearance Matters
Appearance Matters: The Podcast! Is the official podcast of the Centre for Appearance Research – a world leading research centre investigating body image and appearance psychology research, based at the University of the West of England in Bristol, UK.
